Mark Foster Gage is tired of boring and boxy skyscrapers. He
wants gargoyles.
Gage, principal and founder of Mark Foster Gage Architects,
recently released his plans for a mammoth 102-story building at 41 W. 57th
St., right below New York's Central Park.
Inspired by the hit HBO show "Game of Thrones,"
Gage and his colleagues have taken to calling the regal building "The
Khaleesi," a nod to character Daenerys Targaryen's role as queen and
mother of dragons.
It certainly does look fit for a Khaleesi.
Gage, an assistant dean at the Yale School of Architecture,
recently led a two-year research project on stone-carving.

The same techniques that students used to sculpt Minions
(seen here) could someday help create the limestone facade that drapes over the
Khaleesi skyscraper.

The imagined result — a 1,492-foot tower that fits 91
residential units along with shops and a 4-star restaurant — is just stunning.

At night, it would shine extra bright.

"I think that many of the supertall buildings being
built in New York City are virtually free of architectural design," Gage
explains in a project statement. "Design is thinking of a great many
things like how a building appears from different distances, or in this case,
how to make each floor unique to the owner."

Gage also sees the inventive design as a way to attract
future residents and shoppers. "It's fairly commonly understood in most
industries that beauty translates into money — we're bringing such thinking
back into architecture and development."
Mark Foster Gage
Gage has no concrete plans for building the structure just
yet, but he and his team have created several renderings that put The Khaleesi
smack-dab in the heart of midtown.
